Model Bonny opts for a change in scene

PETALING JAYA: Singapore model-turned-writer Bonny Hicks, whose book Excuse Me, Are You A Model? caused a stir in the straight-laced republic, is quitting modelling for good.

Hicks, who has been a top model for five years, says she is “tired and wants a change.”

“By next week, I’ll be living in Jakarta. I’m joining an advertising agency to do copywriting and account servicing,” she said in an interview yesterday.

She was here to promote her second and latest book, Discuss Disgust.

Hicks, 24, is joining Hitam Putih, a big homegrown agency in Indonesia.

“Out of three job offers that came, I took up this third one which was offered early this month.

“I’ll give this one a try for about two years before deciding whether to move on.”

Why Jakarta?

“Well, I’m not one who loves the cities and it’s not a career but a lifestyle move. I’m not aiming for the corporate ladder or I would have chosen to work in Hong Kong or some place cosmopolitan,” she said.

Hicks has no regrets turning her back on modelling.

She felt she had been in modelling longer than she thought. She never wanted to be a model anyway and only gave herself three years.

After handing some old newspapers to The Star in support of Lend A Hand, Save Earth campaign, Hicks said:

“It’s trendy to be green and it’s a subject to talk about. Whatever the motives behind the increasing level of environmental consciousness, it’s a good thing. It can do good to the environment.

“I like to think I’m green. I’m very concerned about the environment. I love the sea and feels sad when people take big corals home. In most resorts, they put up signs discouraging such acts.

“I buy tuna fish that are dolphin-friendly. I make sure that the cosmetics that I use are not tested on animals and I also use CFC-free aerosols.”
